Case study: Solarcrown Commercial PV panels enable Dunns Food and Drinks to produce 250,000 kWh of renewable energy

Case study: Solarcrown Commercial PV panels enable Dunns Food and Drinks to produce 250,000 kWh of renewable energy

“We are determined to go green and stay in the black”.

Leading supplier of food and drinks in Scotland, Dunns Food and Drinks, have a clear business strategy to reduce the company’s environmental impact. This includes minimising energy usage within the workplace and reducing waste.

They were keen to discuss renewable energy systems with Solarcrown Commercial, and how they would support their green agenda.

The brief

Dunns Food and Drinks commissioned Solarcrown Commercial to carry out preliminary consultancy services with a view to designing and installing a renewable energy system that would allow them to maximise the production of their own green energy at their headquarters at Blantyre.

The solution

Solarcrown Commercial conducted a site audit to advise that the most cost-effective way for Dunns Food and Drinks to generate their own electricity would be to design and install a solar PV (photovoltaic) system on the warehouse roof. This would provide the required first step, off-grid solution for energy storage, control and distribution.

We guided Dunns Food and Drinks through the preconstruction works that would confirm the viability of the project. These included:

  • An assessment of the structural integrity of the supporting roof on which the system would be installed
  • Planning and environmental approval
  • Investigations into the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) capacity for connection.

We used our 15+ years of experience to resolve these matters to the satisfaction of both the client and the authorities without any issues.

Once the viability of the project was established, Solarcrown Commercial designed, installed, and commissioned 300kWp of Solar PV panels on the warehouse roof, providing 250,000kWh of electricity per year and covering over a quarter of total electricity demand.

The installation was carried out quickly, safely and to the complete satisfaction of our client.

Benefits to the client

Dunns Food and Drinks can now generate over 25% of their own electricity at a production rate of only 5p per kWh.

This is just the first phase of energy production, storage and management for our client. We have also provided consultancy services for the introduction of ultra-low energy lighting with wireless intelligent controls that offer the potential to shave a further 100,000 kWh from their energy demand. This lighting proposition, in combination with the solar PV installation, will cut their total energy consumption by an impressive 50%.

We are also investigating a standalone energy harvesting facility with further solar installations and battery storage. With a sensible commercial approach our client is looking to cut total energy demand by 80%.

Scott Dryburgh of Dunns Food and Drinks commented:

“Solarcrown Commercial were a pleasure to work with throughout the whole process, their personable and professional manner coupled with their knowledge and experience was exceptional. I would genuinely be pleased to recommend their services.”
