Upskilling Local Roofers with In-Roof Solar PV Installation Training

Roofers being trained on in-roof solar panel installation

As the demand for integrated solar PV systems on new build homes continues to rise, we recognised a key opportunity to enable local roofing contractors to upskill and deliver in-roof solar installations confidently and competently. We decided to do this to support the transition to Net Zero and strengthens the local SME ecosystem, ensuring long-term reliability and accountability on-site.

Disconnect Between Trades

Many new build projects now require solar PV systems to be installed as part of the roofing package. However, a common issue has emerged with roofing contractors and solar PV companies often working independently, leading to warranty disputes and operational challenges when things go wrong. If there’s a leak, the roofer blames the solar installer, and vice versa. Builders and developers have been calling for a more integrated, collaborative solution.

One such opportunity came with Steve Daley & Son, an established roofing contractor looking to expand into solar PV installations. While they had extensive roofing experience, they had yet to take on PV work directly. Recognising their potential and the growing need for in-roof solutions, we partnered with them to deliver a tailored training programme.

On-Site, Manufacturer-Supported Training

To deliver the training we built a rig at our headquarters and coordinated with our solar panel manufacturer to deliver practical, on-site training for the roofing teams. This approach enabled hands-on training provided by certified staff employed by the manufacturer ensuring compliance with product specifications and best practices.

The first training session trained a dozen roofers, each of whom could then be allocated to individual teams amplifying the reach of that initial knowledge-sharing effort. These roofers are now equipped to install in-roof PV systems as part of their existing roofing contracts, with SCC handling the electrical work and compliance certifications.

A Scalable Model for Green Skills Development

Following the success of this first session, we have already begun rolling out the programme to other roofing contractors and we’re actively looking to partner with more roofing companies who want to expand their offering to include solar PV.

Our goal is to create a joined-up approach, where roofing contractors manage the roofing element, and we support with training, electrical works, and certification. This makes solar PV more accessible and reliable while equipping local tradespeople with green skills that will serve them for years to come.

Practical Action for Net Zero

By investing in upskilling local contractors, we are not just meeting today’s demand for integrated solar PV, it’s building a stronger, more sustainable future for the industry. This training initiative is a clear example of how collaboration, knowledge-sharing and practical support can accelerate the UK’s progress towards its Net Zero targets, while empowering local businesses and their workforce to thrive in the growing green energy economy.
