Our intelligent lighting project at Evelina London Children’s Hospital has been featured in the latest issue of Energy in Buildings & Industry (EiBI), highlighting how intelligent lighting can help healthcare estates reduce energy consumption, improve compliance and strengthen operational performance.
The article explores the challenges faced by healthcare estates teams as they work to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions while maintaining high standards of patient care and building performance.
Delivered through the ProcurePlus framework, the project involved the design, installation and commissioning of an intelligent lighting solution across seven floors of the hospital, covering wards, operating theatres, consultation rooms, corridors and public spaces.
The upgrade combined high-efficiency LED lighting with wireless intelligent controls and automated emergency lighting testing, providing greater visibility and control for the estates team while significantly reducing energy consumption.
The project achieved:
- 80% reduction in lighting-related electricity consumption
- £392,586 first-year electricity cost saving
- 239.97 tonnes of CO₂ saved in the first year
- £15.1 million projected lifetime savings
- 3.75-year payback period
The EiBI article focuses on how intelligent lighting can move beyond simple energy savings to become part of a wider building infrastructure strategy. Through intelligent controls, automated compliance reporting and centralised monitoring, healthcare estates teams can reduce maintenance burdens, improve operational efficiency and gain greater visibility of asset performance.
The feature also highlights the importance of delivering energy projects within live healthcare environments, where patient care and operational continuity must remain the highest priority throughout the programme.
