Solar PV installation at the City of London Academy, Highgate Hill, London

Solarcrown Commercial was commissioned for energy consultancy services and the installation of solar PV panels on two roofs at the City of London Academy, Highgate Hill in London.

Energy Consultants

Solarcrown Commercial is a team of energy consultants and solar PV (photovoltaic) design and installation specialists. Initially, the Director of Finance and Operations at the City of London Academy requested our consultancy services regarding the installation of solar PV panels. His aim was to reduce CO₂ emissions and combat spiralling electricity costs. He needed a professional and detailed performance specification to allow him to go to competitive tender.

Our consultancy services involved a mechanical and electrical survey of all related buildings and structural components. Following a detailed analysis of the Academy’s daily electrical use, we were able to design a solar PV system that would optimise energy consumption reduction and financial return on investment.

On behalf of the client, we managed all dialogue on matters related to the DNO (District Network Operator) G99 application and approval. G99 is the regulation for the connection of any energy generation device with the main electrical utility grid.

Through our expert design and consultancy services we produced a detailed performance specification that covered various critical factors, including:

  • Project preamble (contract specifications, cost estimates, work description etc)
  • Financial model
  • Preliminary and general conditions
  • Detailed design, including preferred materials and equipment
  • Warranty and commissioning requirements.

The contracts and delivery division of Solarcrown Commercial was invited to tender for the installation works. After a successful tender process, Solarcrown Commercial was commissioned by the City of London Academy Board to implement the total works package based on our unique logistics and delivery plan and commercially competitive offer.

Development

The challenges of this project were dominated by access and logistics, but the Solarcrown Commercial pre-contract delivery and logistics plan gave the college the confidence and security that the project had been considered in great detail and we had a viable solution.

Access to both roofs was hampered by having no practical method of erecting access scaffolding around the building, and the approach roads were particularly restricted. We decided upon the use of cranes with co-ordinated delivery to overcome the issue.

Solar PV panels were installed across the two roofs.

Outcome

Detailed planning was crucial to the successful delivery of this project within the very short allocated lead time of just one week. Being involved in the project from the initial consultation phase allowed us to fully manage the site, co-ordinate all aspects of the installation and pre-empt challenges that may have otherwise delayed the installation.

By generating renewable energy and reducing reliance on the National Grid and further mitigating the effect of fluctuating energy prices, the City of London Academy is becoming more self-sufficient in its efforts to heat and illuminate its buildings. Over time, the return on investment will be significant for a site of its size.

46,700 kWh of solar energy will be provided to the Academy annually through the generation of renewable energy. The reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional electrical energy supply is equivalent to planting 415 trees every year in the heart of London. The installation will be a key factor in achieving the Board’s green energy goals and support of the government’s commitment to reach Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050.
