Solar Crown Commercial are industry-leading net zero consultants. We are passionate in net carbon zero consulting and welcome the fact businesses and governments around the world are pledging their commitment to reducing their carbon emissions.

Reducing our carbon footprint has never been more important. The UK Government recently set a legally binding commitment to achieve ‘net zero’ by 2050, to prevent the most damaging effects of climate change on the planet. It is therefore fundamental that you start now by looking at cost-effective ways to reduce carbon emissions within your business operations.

With the climate risk growing by the day, a non-carbon future is something that all businesses must now work towards and achieve by 2050. Solarcrown Commercial plays a key role in helping you do exactly that by reducing your carbon impact with solar PV systems. Often the first step in achieving carbon neutrality and then proceeding to further reduce greenhouse emissions.

Net Zero explained

The term “net zero” refers to achieving a balance between greenhouse gas emissions produced and emissions removed from the atmosphere. According to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, the goal of net zero is to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

To achieve net zero, emissions must be reduced to the greatest extent possible, and any remaining emissions must be offset by removing an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere via methods such as afforestation, reforestation, and carbon capture and storage.

How do I achieve carbon net zero?

It can be overwhelming thinking about how your business can achieve net zero. Common challenges we face include:

  • A general lack of clarity as to what net zero actually is.
  • A general lack of clarity regarding the integration of climate risks.
  • A pre-existing belief that actioning a net zero roadmap is expensive.
  • Confusion in directing resources away from a business’s core service in order to focus on creating a net zero plan.
  • What technology should a business use and how to make the energy transition?
  • The inability of businesses to find a professional sustainability specialist.
  • Businesses struggling with where to begin on the net-zero transition.

The first step in your roadmap to achieving carbon net zero includes identifying where your greenhouse gas emissions are coming from. These can include:

  • Direct emissions (e.g. if you have a fleet of vehicles, or fuel combustion).
  • Indirect emissions (e.g. from heating systems or electricity).
  • Other indirect emissions that aren’t related to your energy usage (e.g. waste disposal and employee travel).

Once you have built up a clear understanding of your business’ energy footprint, the next step is building a carbon-neutral strategy. We will help you with every step, and it’s about balancing quick wins with longer-term ambitions to make it work for your business and ensure compliance.

This step includes creating a plan of action that involves:

  • Identifying your business goals and how they relate to net zero.
  • Thinking about your equipment/technology that should be upgraded or replaced to improve efficiency.
  • Thinking about your businesses processes e.g. recycling or disposing of waste materials.
  • Ongoing assessments and audits e.g. energy usage, waste, and transport; to highlight further opportunities for you to reduce carbon emissions.

Making sure you constantly review your financials and energy data to ensure it is cost-effective for your business as well as making sure you’re on the right direction on your net zero roadmap.
