Newcastle City Library is a landmark public library situated in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. Completed in March 2009 and officially opened in June of the same year, the six-storey structure was designed by Ryder Architecture. It features a striking glass and steel facade and spans a total floor area of 8,300 sqm (89,308 sqft). The library is a vital community hub, attracting an estimated 60,000 to 65,000 visitors each month.
Working in partnership with Integral, a leading facilities management company, we were commissioned to deliver a comprehensive lighting upgrade at the library in two key phases.
Phase 1: Retrofit Lighting Installation
The first phase focused on retrofitting the existing lighting with energy-efficient LED systems, completed over four nights to avoid disrupting public access. The installation included, 48 DALI dimmable linear luminaires, 16 DALI dimmable linear luminaires with DALI emergency, 13 DALI retrofit LED geartrays and diffusers for floodlights, and 8 downlights with bezels to fit existing cut-outs.
To enhance lighting control, we integrated the Vossloh-Schwabe Blu2Light system, a wireless, Bluetooth® Mesh-based solution that enables automated lighting adjustments based on occupancy and daylight levels. This system improves energy efficiency, comfort, and flexibility for building management through secure, app-based controls and decentralised operation.
The team showed the versatility of our approach by manufacturing the gear trays for the floodlights on site to cater for any variations.
Phase 2: New Lighting Installation
Phase two involved the installation of new lighting to further enhance the building’s interior. Completed over two nights, this phase included high bays, downlights, and bulkheads.
The high bays were fitted in the atrium which fills the full six storey height of the building so required a 17m electric spider boom.
This installation delivered improved lighting quality and energy efficiency throughout the library, contributing to a more comfortable environment for both visitors and staff.
Installation Team & Project Delivery
The success of the Newcastle City Library project is a reflection of the knowledge, professionalism, and dedication of our installation team. Working through the night in a busy public building required meticulous planning, precise execution, and strong collaboration with Integral. The team brought a wealth of technical expertise to the project and took great care to ensure all work was completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. Integral’s comprehensive RAMS was fully adhered to by the team.
Project Completion & Handover
At the conclusion of the project, we provided a comprehensive handover pack to the client. This included a warranty certificate, complete kit list, commercial completion sheet, product data sheets, health and safety documentation, and the signed installation contract.
This two-phase lighting project at Newcastle City Library demonstrates our ability to deliver high-quality, technically complex lighting solutions within live public environments.
